JPG vs PNG

JPEG (or JPG) is the standard format for photographs because it uses lossy compression to keep file sizes incredibly small. However, JPEG does not support transparency.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression and supports an alpha channel, meaning it can have completely transparent backgrounds.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

While converting a JPG to a PNG will not magically remove the background for you, it changes the file format to one that supports transparency. If you plan to import a photograph into graphic design software (like Photoshop or Figma) to cut out the subject, you must convert it to PNG first to preserve the transparent background when saving.
Furthermore, if you are saving an image containing sharp text or UI elements, PNG prevents the blurry "artifacts" that JPEG compression introduces.
